Cooking Healthy with Your Children
One of the nicest things you can do with your children is to teach them how to cook, and to cook with them. Most children are intrigued by the magic that goes on in a kitchen, especially when they're very young. You will have no problems recruiting your sous-chef, and they may in fact offer their services before you even ask.
Cooking is a fun activity that you can share with your children. It's a good way for you to spend time together and nurture a bond between the both of you. You may even inspire in them a love for cooking. Who knows? After a college graduation, you may have a real chef one day!
No matter what happens or how it turns out, having fun with your children in the kitchen despite how messy it can get will be all worth it in the end. You can always clean up a mess, but you won’t always have time to spend with your children.
Set up a schedule for when you and your children can cook together. It doesn't have to be every night, it can be every other night or on weekends when you both have plenty of time. Whatever schedule works best for both of you is what will be best.
Cooking with you children is a good way to get your children involved with healthy eating. Explaining the different dishes and their benefits will slowly help your children understand what healthy eating is all about. Apart from that, you are teaching them healthy cooking, which will come in handy to them in the future!
Before anything, prepare what you're going to cook and make the kitchen child friendly. This is especially true if they're very young. Hide sharp objects, and do the prepping if it requires a lot of chopping and other activities not suitable for a young child. Teach your young children about which surfaces they can and cannot touch. You don't want to cut your cooking activity short because you have to rush to the hospital to treat a burn!
While your children are young, keep your dishes simple. Base your dish difficulty on how much your child can do. In early childhood, children should stick to small tasks like measuring, stirring, and fixing ingredients. They are also your ultimate taste testers!
Middle childhood brings peeling and cutting or chopping, but with supervision. You can guide your child's hands the first few times they chop and peel so that they get used to the motion. They can also take charge of preparing the dish themselves, like layering the different ingredients of a lasagna.
Finally, have fun. Reinforce your child's interest in the kitchen by playing games while you cook or singing songs. You can pretend that you are both world class chefs on a cooking show, and you are doing a demonstration (maybe for the younger siblings.) Whatever you choose, just have fun cooking healthy foods with your children. It'll be a great experience for you both!
