Healthy Children: What Makes a Child Healthy?
Every parent wants a healthy child, you are unlikely to meet one who doesn't. Healthy, meaning a child who is physically well, happy, and has all of his or her systems functioning properly. According to the World Health Organization, health isn't just about not being sick, but it has to do with the whole person, and all of their aspects.
Physically, a healthy child is one who is free of disease, of course, but also is in a physical state to be able to fight off diseases or whose body is in good physical condition. A physically healthy child is a child that eats well or has a diet composed of good and nutritious food, receives all the nutrients he or she needs to remain healthy, exercises regularly, and is continuing to develop at a normal or typical growth rate.
Most children are relatively healthy. Even without the most ideal diets, many children grow up normally and without major problems. Still, as a parent you always want the best for your children, and knowing that your child's health can be better with just a little help from you is something most parents are willing to do, which is why we discuss what makes a child healthy at each stage in their growth and development.
Prenatal Health
It is important to note that your child's health does not begin upon birth. It begins in the womb. While a mother is carrying her child, everything she takes in will affect the baby. At this point in your child's life, you are sharing everything. From food, to water, to exercise, to oxygen. This is why expectant mothers are asked not to smoke or be around smokers, or drink alcoholic beverages. Other activities like sea diving are also prohibited, as the effects of under water pressure on a developing fetus are unknown, and have never been tested.
More than that, however, mothers have to watch what they eat while pregnant. Unhealthy eating while pregnant can definitely affect the child's health. For example, many mothers are asked to stop eating sushi and sashimi for fear of what the mercury content will do to a child.
A healthy child in this stage of development is solely dependent on the mother. You and your child are connected in every way. Whenever you are doing something unhealthy, it can affect your child's health and development. To make sure your child is healthy, mothers are usually asked to take a vitamin, to eat only healthy foods, and to get some exercise in order to keep good circulation. A good amount of rest is also recommended.
