Healthy Eating and Children: The Importance of Eating Together
Eating together as a family is not only a good way to make sure your children eat healthy, but it's one of the best ways for parents, children, and siblings to form strong bonds with each other. Daily schedules with school and work don't always allow families to eat together, but breakfast and dinner are two meals that most families can make an effort to have together. Knowing that they have a good meal, and pleasant time with their family to look forward to at the end of each day can be very comforting for kids, and you as a parent should try your best to provide them with that comfort and stability.
When eating together with your children, take this as an opportunity to model healthy eating. As mentioned in other articles, children can take on the eating habits of their parents. Fathers who overeat tend to have sons that overeat as well. While eating together, teach your children about healthy eating and all of its benefits by discussing the foods you eat. It's also a good chance for you to introduce new dishes and fruits or vegetables.
Meal time with your children will also allow you to get to know them better. Ask them about school and hobbies, and keep up with your child's interests. Make your conversations pleasant and something to look forward to.
Try to remember to never fight at the dinner table in order not to deter your children from eating together with you and the rest of the family. Especially do not argue about food as this may become a reason for your child to rebel against healthy eating.
One way to truly promote eating as a family is to get your children involved in the kitchen. Making your children a part of the cooking process is one great way to introduce them to healthy foods and healthy eating! Many children are curious about how things work and how things are made. If you can encourage your children to join you in the kitchen and help you during the mealtime preparation, they are more likely to eat the end result. If a child is especially proud of what they've done, they will want to be able to take part of every aspect of it. In this case, they will want to eat whatever it is in the end.
As your children get older, they will become very accustomed to the family meal. With age comes more activities, however, and don't be surprised if your child would rather do things with their friends, than eat dinner with the family. Tell your children that they are free to invite friends over for dinner. This will keep your eating as a family consistent, and you will be able to see what kind of friends your children have made, and in turn see what direction they're going in. Eating as a family is one of the best ways to guide your children and keep them out of trouble. There is also a very high correlation between children who eat meals together with their family and children who stay out of trouble.
If your children go to the same school, and as a result have the same lunch schedule, encourage them to eat together. This is one way to make your children form strong ties with each other, and even share friends. When siblings share friends, they are always likely to choose good quality friends.
Another reason to get your children to eat together is that if you've packed them a healthy lunch, your child will always have someone else eating the same thing with them. This makes your child feel less alienated in case their school mates have unhealthy eating habits.
Finally, encourage your children to snack together when they get home from school. You can do this by preparing the snacks early on and making a rule that snacks have to be eaten in the kitchen. Strong sibling bonds help children stay out of trouble, and teach children that they have people that they can count on for the rest of their lives.
