How Healthy Eating Saves Money at Restaurants

When eating out with your family, know that the more pricey places usually have healthier dishes. This is because time and care is taken into selecting quality ingredients, as well as preparing the food. Some pricier places do serve unhealthy foods, though, and in unhealthy portions. The best way for you to eat healthily at restaurants is for you to make healthy choices.

Many menus in traditional restaurants come with a description of each dish, highlighting what is in the dish and how it is cooked. This will give you an idea of how it ranks on a healthy food scale. For example, grilled, roasted, or braised meats are much healthier than deep fried. Some dishes feature whole wheat options, or reduced dairy. Go for a lot of vegetables if you can. Encourage your children to make the same kind of choices, and teach them to do so even when they're eating out and you're not around. This shows your children that healthy eating is a way of life for your family, and it isn't something that changes just because you are eating out.

One of the problems with eating out at restaurants is that portions are large. You can ask your waiter how big portions are, and if you know it is too big for daily-recommendations, encourage your children to share a meal. Not only is this healthier for them, but it helps you save money because you're feeding two children with the price of one meal.

Despite the challenges with food choices and unhealthy portions, eating at traditional restaurants are definitely healthier than eating at fast foods. As mentioned earlier, traditional restaurants use different quality foods, they prepare the foods differently, and their foods are unlikely to have been flash frozen. As also mentioned earlier, eating out in traditional restaurants can help introduce your children to different types of cuisine, and this is good for their education.

Fast Foods: Learning to Compromise

When it comes to fast foods, try making healthy choices as well. Fast food places are required to have the nutrition facts and calorie counts of each of their dishes. If it isn't on display, ask for it. This will help you make decisions for you family. Just like in restaurants, fast food places also have healthy choices like grilled meats, a salad bar, baked potatoes, and fish. Go for these options, and encourage your children as well. If you're having pizza, try the thin crust and vegetarian. You're cutting down on unnecessary grains, plus you will be eating vegetables too!

Some fast foods offer a healthy spin to all their dishes. For example, the In-N-Out Burger chain promotes fresh food, even if it comes fast. They advertise french fries that are chopped only after you order it, and they guarantee that the beef in your burger was alive just a few days before. While burgers and fries still aren't the healthiest of foods, these little things can count in the sense that the food hasn't been sitting in a freezer for months, therefore losing nutrients as it ages.

There are other fast food places that offer a good compromise for those that prefer healthy. Keep up to date whenever one opens up near you. Learning to compromise eating at a fast food restaurant but still being able to choose a possible healthier option or make healthy choices despite the fact that you're eating at a fast food restaurant is a good way to meet in the middle, whether it be with your cravings or with your children's clamoring.

Like traditional restaurants, fast foods also have a tendency to serve very large portions or they give you the option to order a larger portion. You can encourage your children to share meals in fast food places as well, especially because these fast food portions are loaded with calories and sodium. Don't forget to use the calorie counter as a guide when eating at fast food places. Try not to order soda when in a fast food restaurant or when eating out in general. Go for water or juice.
