Iron Poisoning Symptoms In Children To Look Out For!

Kid’s love candy, and will eat practically anything that bears close resemblance to it. Considering there are a variety of things that resemble tasty sweets, it’s important that we ensure such items stay out of reach.

However, one item that’s constantly overlooked as a potential threat when digested is iron supplements. Some parents don’t realize the severe damage an overdose of iron can do to a child, nor how frequent such incidents occur all over the world.

A sudden overdose of the supplement can bring about a variety of health related problems. In order to determine if your loved one has ingested a toxic amount, you need to look out for the different iron poisoning symptoms he may be displaying.

With that said, here’s one indicator: diarrhea. You may notice it’ll be of a darker color, or even accompanied by blood. Your offspring may also be experiencing nausea, fatigue, and cough up blood if he has eaten too much supplemental iron.

More iron poisoning symptoms include dehydration and low blood pressure. He may also start feeling cold all of a sudden, regardless if it’s a hot summer day. Headaches accompanied by a fever are other possible signs, as well as bluish lips and fingertips.

If your boy or girl has ingested a significantly large amount, the indicators of overdose can get much worse. Convulsions or a coma may take place in as early as 30 minutes after ingesting the lethal dosage, and in some instances, death.

The lethal amount of iron will differ from person to person. The general formula for computing the toxicity level is as follows: 10 to 20mg for every kilogram. That means, the smaller the child, the more dangerous this supplement becomes for him.

Also, it’s important that you understand that iron poisoning symptoms may disappear a couple of hours after your child displays them, and come back within a day’s time. That said, if you suspect that your children have ingested a dangerous amount of iron supplements, do not make any hesitations in calling your local poison control center.

If you don’t know the number of the local establishment described above, it’d be advisable that you immediately bring you kid to a hospital or nearest medical facility.
