Easy and Healthy Snacks
to Prepare for Kids

Getting your kids to eat healthy may not be the easiest task there is, most especially since there are so many other options. Outside of your home they may see their peers eating regular store bought food that may not be so healthy.

The temptation to eat chips that are full of synthetic flavors, pretzels filled with salt and candy bars that are overflowing with sugar can be hard to resist; but this does not mean that you have to give up on having your kids eat healthy food. Even if you aren’t around them all the time to watch what they eat, you can still make sure that they eat nutritious food by preparing healthy snacks for them at home or to take along to eat at school.

A lot of kids often look for something that they can munch on while watching television or doing other things. The most common snack food they seek out during times like these are chips. If your child is one for this type of snacks then give him baked tortilla chips. There are those which come without seasoning so there is less sodium content. Pair it up with some homemade salsa that you can make by putting tomatoes, bell peppers, celery and cilantro into a food chopper. This can keep for several days if kept refrigerated.

Nuts are also a good alternative to chips; just make sure that you buy those with less salt and oil in them. If your child is below five years old, then it may be best to skip nuts for the moment to avoid nut allergies.

Fruits are also a good idea for snacks because they are naturally sweet and if your child has a sweet tooth then this should give him a fix. Apples and bananas are often easy enough for kids to get themselves and take none or little preparation. If you want you may pre-wash apples and keep them in the fridge.  Keep fruits on your table or counter where your kids can see them. If they see it then they are more likely to eat it.

Other fruits such as cantaloupe and water melon may be good but too hard for kids to get themselves. Slice these up into small pieces and keep it in the fridge. You can also mix up different fruits for a fresh fruit salad.

Sandwiches are well loved snacks by kids, and you can still serve them this. Just make sure that the bread you use is whole wheat instead of white. If you are serving a peanut butter and jelly sandwich then make sure that the jelly you use contains less sugar and no artificial sweeteners. If you decide to serve a cheese sandwich then make sure that your cheese is natural and not processed.

There can be many alternatives to the usual junk that your kids snack on. Take a little time and effort and you will be able to find healthy snacks to prepare.
