Halloween Recipes for Kids
Oftentimes, we neglect nutrition for kids – activities like Halloween, we tend to be lenient towards sweets. Indulgences like that make us moms feel guilty after the occasion. Well, I was like that … for a time.
So last Halloween, I did something different – I wanted my kids (and the other kids visiting at that time) to enjoy the Halloween spirit, but never losing sight of nutritious and healthy holiday food. My kids and I prepared some special treats after the trick-and-treating. They couldn’t wait to come back home then.
Fruit cups Jack O’ Lantern style.
We will use oranges for this recipe – treat it like a pumpkin for making a Jack O’ Lantern.
1. Cut the tops off of 8 oranges.
2.
Scoop out the inside of the orange, but be careful not to rip the peel.
3.
Draw Jack O’ Lantern faces on the oranges.
4.
In a bowl, combine 2 cans of fruit cocktail, 1 can of pineapple chunks and the scooped out oranges.
5.
Mix and scoop the fruit mixture into the oranges. Chill for at least an hour before serving.
Halloween Pizza.
1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.
2.
Prepare a pizza shell/dough with 1 jar of pizza sauce (readily available in the market) and some pepperoni.
3.
Cut some Halloween shapes out of the cheese and arrange it strategically on the pizza.
4.
Bake until the cheese has melted and/or the crust has turned golden brown.
For added effect, you can put some other ingredients on it, like some olives (and call it whiteless eyeballs). You can even call it by another name (something like Guts Pizza would probably do the trick).
Booberry Shake.
Reminds me of Elmo of Sesame Street, having Booberry pie. This one though is a shake.
1. Put 2 ½ cups of blueberries, 1 ¼ cups of apple juice, ¼ cup of milk, a cup of vanilla ice cream and half a teaspoon of ground cinnamon in a blender.
2.
Pulse it first until the berries are all cut up.
3.
Blend it on an alternate of medium and high until smooth.
It’s best served cold, so consume immediately (or pour just before the kids come back from their house-to-house). This recipe makes more than 4 servings.
Edible Spiders.
A friend of mine suggested this since her kids loved them.
1. Break off small pretzel sticks in half.
2.
Poke the sides of the marshmallow – you should have 3 pretzel “legs” one each side.
3.
Melt 2 cups of semisweet chocolate chips with the butter in a double boiler.
4.
Dip the marshmallow spiders in the chocolate mix and coat it using a spoon.
5.
Put it on a cookie sheet and put “eyes” on the marshmallows. Allow these to cool before consumption.
Spaghetti and Meatballs … er, Eyeballs.
Yes, good ole spaghetti can be turned into a creepy goulash of a dish.
1. Mix a pound of hamburger, an egg, about ½ a cup of bread crumbs, some oregano and garlic salt. Form into meatballs.
2.
Stuff green olives with pimientos to make the eyeballs; push these into the middle of the meatballs.
3.
Put it into a shallow baking dish and cover with spaghetti sauce. Bake for at least an hour, with a temperature of 350 degrees.
4.
Serve over cooked spaghetti.
Halloween Thirst Quencher.
1. Mix a pack of grape juice, a pack of orange juice (these should preferably be juice mixes in powdered form), about 2 cups of sugar, and 3 quarts of cold water.
2.
Mix and add some more water to taste.
3.
Add a quart of chilled ginger ale just before serving.
Halloween brings out the creative cook-side of you. Use it to your advantage, and your kids will just love you to bits.
