Kids Eating Habits
Like many behaviors and coping strategies, your kids eating habits is something that can be molded. If you start them on good eating habits while they’re young, they are likely to continue these good habits onto adulthood.
Healthy eating habits allow your children to maintain healthy weights and good nutrition, and it is also a great way for them to prevent sickness. The best way to get your children into a healthy eating habit is to model it yourself, and have older family members do the same. Children will copy those around them. And if everyone is doing it, they will probably jump on the bandwagon.
Teach by example and be the first to eat healthy. Try to make a good selection of healthy food available at your house at all times. This will help your children make healthy food choices even when they are away from home because they will be looking for what is familiar to them. Cut down on fatty foods and soda drinks. Try not to have sugary cereals or processed meat in your home. The more often you can promote healthy food, the better, as it will seem more normal to your child.
You can also try to ask your child what they would like you to buy at the grocery, or take them with you when you go grocery shopping. Getting an idea of what they want to eat can help you come up with healthier alternatives, and steer them in a healthier direction.
Instill habits of eating time and eating places, as these are very good habits to have. Make a schedule of meals and snacks in your house, and make your children stick to this schedule. This will help you monitor their calorie intake.
Apart from the schedule, assign designated food zones like the kitchen, dining room, and patio. Keeping your children from eating in their rooms and living room will not only help you in terms of cleaning up, but it will also help them to not overeat or under-eat, as children tend to overeat or under-eat when there are many other things they can do while they are eating.
Another way to prevent overeating is getting your children to eat slowly. Your body will usually tell you when you’ve had enough, but if you eat too fast your body can’t tell you in time. Eating slowly is good for your child’s health, and will help keep their calories in check.
Make it a habit to eat with your children or having family meals together, even if it’s just for dinnertime. Eating with your children at mealtimes helps you see what eating habits and manners they’ve developed, as well as foster a stronger bond between family members. Make these family meals pleasant and engaging. If you can get your children to look forward to eating meals with you, they are less likely to eat elsewhere or other things as they’d like to save their appetites for the family meal.
Much like eating as a family, if you can get your children involved in the kitchen, this will strengthen the bond between you. It also helps you introduce new foods and vegetables to them. Children are likely to want to try and eat something they helped to make, even if it comes out looking odd. Instead of having a new dish just show up at the table and having them be doubtful of it, involving them in the process helps them see and know what was going on, and it is an easier way to introduce new foods.
Lastly, make sure your eating habits are good too. When you go out to a restaurant to eat with your children, choose the healthier items on the menu and your children will follow. Remember that your kids healthy eating habits starts with you, and if you have bad habits yourself, your strategies may not work. Bad habits die hard, and yours have to die first.
